You Should Use Emacs (tm) :-).

Okay, seriously enough: at each release we try to provide better default
colors. We know that experienced users will anyway modify them to suit
their own needs, so basically we do not promote too much our own colors,
but try to find something which could be good enough for a start with The
Real Editor And More (tm).

In 7.0, the default background for Emacs was white, it was unreadable. Now
it's hopefully better. For XEmacs, well, I don't know exactly how much
work has been done since the 7.0 on color scheme..
