You should be able to change the "variable-width" font used for printing;
the fact that the font name is not displaying (it displays as empty squares)
is a hint that the choosent font is probably not appropriate.

For ~/.gtkrc, indeed it may be rewritten by the theme-engine (to provide a
similar theme to old gtk1 programs), and in such case it is ~/.gtkrc.mine that
has to be modified.

I had recently installed Mandrake9.1 final and I get some very "ugly" fonts on the 
menus/folders, only the email contents which appear with the "settings" defined fonts 
are showing properly. This was not happening with Mandrake9.1rc1 which I was using 
prior to Mdk9.1.
Also I didn't find this problem on any other application so far.
