I think there is other issue with Radeon DRI like:
the key to chnage screen brightness for example does work on the 4.3 Radeon but not on the 4.3 Radeon with DRI..

Boot to init 3 and then use startx or Xtart. Now when you log out of X you will be dropped back to init 3.
I have run into the same situation and though it does happen with other
cards it is more problematic with ATI.
For some reason if you boot to init 5 and then logout, shutting down dm
fails and thus the black screen and apparent lock-up. Bypassing dm eliminates the problem.
