No, Paul, I'm having a different problem: the normal install doesn't work with
my Apple Studio Display 15" (the original analog one with a blue frame) on i815
onboard graphics. I just tested Mandrake 8.2 and 9.0 on this same system, and
they also have the problem. (Also, check bug 3053 -- I have 64MB RAM, not 1GB.)

The exact problem is that the normal install is driving the monitor at 800x600 @
70Hz. That's not supported by my monitor. 800x600 @ 56Hz is supported, and
800x600 @ 72Hz is supported, but not 800x600 @ 70Hz.

I never saw this problem in the past because my previous Mandrake 8.[012] and
9.0 installs were on a Matrox Millennium G400 Max, and with that video card, the
normal install used some other refresh rate at 800x600 which was compatible with
my monitor.

Anyway, after some more testing, the *real* workaround for my problem is to use
vgahi, not vga16. On at least i815, vgahi uses 1024x768 @ 60Hz, which is
supported by my monitor.

Nonetheless, there's still a place in life for vga16. For one thing, it's still
the only way to do graphical installs under VMware. (The next release of VMware
might fix this, but that's still in beta AFAIK.) Also, I have another monitor
that maxes out at 640x480 @ 60Hz; the only installer mode which did that
resolution/refresh rate combo on my i815 is vga16. Similarly, I once had a
failing 3Dfx Voodoo3 cards that started freezing the computer beyond 16-color
unaccelerated 640x480 @ 60Hz. A year or two later it started freezing the
computer even in 80x25 text mode, but it was still that much extra useful life I
got out of the card.

I have a Geforce 3 TI200 graphics card, requiring that I use vga16 to install RC2.
The screens were very hard to see (I use a Nokia 447XIPlus 17" monitor). The first
screen in particular was a real mess. Later screens were better but check boxes
were very hard to see. Using vga16 is usable but a real chore to see.
