I too have been trying the 2.5 series of kernels. It is starting to look
really good (2.5.70-mm9). The startup is faster and the desktop is more
responsive. Unfortunately I have a few problems since 2.5.67:

1) gnome-terminal still only works as root. I have tried to compare the
strace outputs but It's not obvious and I think this one requires
someone stepping through it with a debugger. Other terminal programs
such as Eterm work.

2) xosview still freezes (reading /proc/*) -This is because the format
of the output from various /proc entries has changes. There is a patch
for this on the kernel mailing list. I can post if required.

3) rmmod still not working -"Can't open 'analog': No such file or
directory". I presume this is fixed by Andrey's recent fixes.

4) xlock and xscreensaver fail to accept the password. Need to hit
ctrl-alt-backspace and re-login. This is the most annoying problem as a
desktop user. Still unresolved. Someone hinted this might be a PAM bug
fixed in a recent red-hat release.

5) My Evolution groups (left-hand icon bar) have gone missing. This
happens when switching from 2.4 to 2.5 and is repeatable. It is
ultimately an Evolution bug. Now that 1.4 is released, it might be
fixed, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

6) from /var/log/messages: /sbin/mingetty[2583]: /dev/tty4: cannot open
tty: Inappropriate ioctl for device.

7) from dmesg: process `named' is using obsolete setsockopt
SO_BSDCOMPAT. This is a cosmetic bug and I believe, it is a trivial fix
pointed out on the Kernel mailing list. Again, I can post the fix to
whom it may concern.

I have mailed these problems to the kernel mailing list and got some
replies (included above). But many issues remain unresolved. I made the
assumption that they must be kernel bugs (2.5 should be compatible with
2.4), but given the length of time these have remained problems and some
of the replies from the kernel mailing list, I think many of them are
application bugs that the new kernel exposes.

Does anyone know if there are recent fixes that might solve some of
these problems? Is anyone seeing the same issues?

What I would really like to see is Mandrake update packages for 9.1 that
makes 9.1 compatible with the 2.5 kernel. The two biggies are the module
tools and screen-saver password problems.

Ed-T.
