If you look at perl-URPM code, you will see a lot of imported rpm code due to *really* weird things since 4.2 (compared to 4.0.4) which avoid other people writing extensions in the same way as urpmi. Such weird things were quite small for 4.0.4 but have been severely growing for 4.2, if rpm used by Mandrake were patched to avoid such things (in order to open a bit more the interface) urpmi will no more be compilable (or even executable) for rpm used by RH and others.
