Sorry for the delay in response.

Unfortunately, the above patch doesn't work. The first apm -s suspends and
resumes correctly; the second kills X, and returns to the GUI login screen. 

The version I gave you does work reliably and repeatably. I think that it's
necessary to kill -STOP Xfree as early as possible, then do the rest of the
suspend-resume, and then kill -CONT xfree at the end.

This only occurs under X, and cannot be fixed by altering /etc/sysconfig/suspend

There's a fix available at the URL above, which you could probably use to modify
your apm scripts, and which also handles restoring sound.
