rc.sysinit checks for kernel 2.2 and mounts ext3 as ext2 if it detects old kernel. It does it by doing
uname -r | grep 2.2 unfortunately, it happily matches x.y.z2-2*mdk (or, 3.2.2 for that matter :) I was cought by 2.5.72-2bor ... attached patch changes it to grep for '^2\.2' that should be more robust ... -andrey
