It can be configured to use one, but it isn't by default, and worked just fine without it last I ran it. During the short period when I packaged it, I asked on the list of suggestions on how to get it to work with MySQL out of the box (mainly for turba) but didn't get any replies. Feel free to play around with the packages and submit whatever you come up with.
