------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-28-06 09:54 ------- I too have lost access to both of my CD drives (one CD-ROM, one CD-RW) which I used to get at via ide-scsi. I think this problem started after I made a couple days' worth of backlogged Cooker updates today. NB: I didn't upgrade my kernel -- I am using kernel-2.4.21.0.13mdk-1-1mdk, and up to very recently I had no problems with my CD drives. I first noticed the problem a few hours after the updates, with no intervening reboot. On rebooting I got a message indicating that a new device had been detected and prompting me to configure it, followed by another message indicating that a device had been removed. (Sadly, I didn't write down the messages.) The boot was normal after that, but I still can't access either CD drive and the entries /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 and /dev/cdroms/cdrom1 which I used to have are no longer there. However ide-scsi does seem to be loaded: [EMAIL PROTECTED] andy]# lsmod Module Size Used by Tainted: P binfmt_misc 7084 1 lp 8128 0 parport_pc 25128 1 parport 34208 1 [lp parport_pc] agpgart 40928 3 (autoclean) snd-seq-midi 5056 0 (autoclean) (unused) snd-emu10k1-synth 5276 0 (autoclean) (unused) snd-emux-synth 31644 0 (autoclean) [snd-emu10k1-synth] snd-seq-midi-emul 6780 0 (autoclean) [snd-emux-synth] snd-seq-virmidi 4572 0 (autoclean) [snd-emux-synth] snd-seq-oss 31136 0 (unused) snd-seq-midi-event 5640 0 [snd-seq-midi snd-seq-virmidi snd-seq-oss] snd-seq 42640 2 [snd-seq-midi snd-emux-synth snd-seq-midi-emul snd-seq-virmidi snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi-event] snd-pcm-oss 43588 0 snd-mixer-oss 14488 0 [snd-pcm-oss] snd-emu10k1 69300 2 [snd-emu10k1-synth] snd-rawmidi 17632 0 [snd-seq-midi snd-seq-virmidi snd-emu10k1] snd-pcm 77568 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-emu10k1] snd-timer 18376 0 [snd-seq snd-pcm] snd-page-alloc 7780 0 [snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm] snd-util-mem 3008 0 [snd-emux-synth snd-emu10k1] snd-ac97-codec 40224 0 [snd-emu10k1] snd-seq-device 5864 0 [snd-seq-midi snd-emu10k1-synth snd-emux-synth snd-seq-oss snd-seq snd-emu10k1 snd-rawmidi] snd-hwdep 6400 0 [snd-emu10k1] snd 40900 2 [snd-seq-midi snd-emux-synth snd-seq-virmidi snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi-event snd-seq snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-emu10k1 snd-rawmidi snd-pcm snd-timer snd-util-mem snd-ac97-codec snd-seq-device snd-hwdep] soundcore 6308 0 [snd] nfsd 74288 8 (autoclean) af_packet 14984 1 (autoclean) floppy 55164 0 3c59x 29616 1 (autoclean) nls_iso8859-1 3516 1 (autoclean) nls_cp850 4316 1 (autoclean) vfat 11820 1 (autoclean) fat 37976 0 (autoclean) [vfat] ide-scsi 11312 0 scsi_mod 103316 1 [ide-scsi] ide-cd 33856 0 cdrom 31680 0 [ide-cd] NVdriver 1667232 10 usb-uhci 24684 0 (unused) usbcore 73024 1 [usb-uhci] ext3 59916 6 jbd 38972 6 [ext3] [EMAIL PROTECTED] andy]# cdrecord -scanbus Cdrecord 2.01a16-dvd (i586-mandrake-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2003 Jrg Schilling Note: This version is an unofficial (modified) version with DVD support Note: and therefore may have bugs that are not present in the original. I have several issues with it. 1. No /dev/rtc is present on boot. This means software like vmware that some of us use for running essential tools under that other operating system don't work well. In fact they barely work at all. 2. Another name collision. This version of the kernel replaced the last version, which worked very well for me. I can restore it, at least I think I have the RPM, but this is the second time we have had a name collision in the 2.4.21 kernel releases. This really shouldn't happen. 3. CDROM access is terrible. I haven't been able to get it to mount since the kernel upgrade. The message is mount /mnt/cdrom /dev/hdc: Input/output error mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified or mount /mnt/cdrom mount: special device /dev/scd0 does not exist depending on how I try to set up my fstab. This seems to mean that ide-scsi is not working.
