Eventually found trouble was due to hardware defect in the motherboard. Using
different motherboard with MDK9.1 goes ok.

description:
System freezes during stage of installing packages, doesn't appear linked to any
particular package. With _very_ minimal packages selected, it installs but
won't boot - ie it does POST then freezes.

Pentium 4 2.4GHz AOpen MX46 U2 motherboard with chipset SIS 650GX/962L
on board NIC Realtek rtl8139
on board audio SIS7012
AGP graphics GeForce4 440

Iso file downloaded today 14 March 2003, files in it dated up to 3 March.
MD5 sum ok, verify of burnt CD to iso file ok

MDK9.0 installed on this hardware and ran ok, except for NIC which I guessed was
due to chipset drivers which are supposed to be updated in 2.4.21 kernel.

hope this is enough of the right type of info
thanks in advance

Peter
