As others have explained, the web server has to do more work when you leave out the /, 
because it has to do a redirect.

Multiplied by enough hits, the amount of extra work could be significant.  In the 
earlier days of the 'net, for a while www.yahoo.com refused to do the redirect if you 
didn't put the /, instead offering an explanation, to condition people to put the /.  
Also mentioned here, it just looks better.  Anyway it saves the server work, and it 
actually decreases the load time (yes, the extra work for the server is often 
noticeable).

So now that this has been explained on the list, can we please make sure to use the / 
in the future when a URL is just a domain?  Thanks.
