It gets it from the boot kernel :(

cat /proc/version to see the kernel you are actually running.  If it
is indeed the -9, check your lilo/grub configuration files
(/etc/lilo.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst) and reinstall the boot loader.

(and yes, my kernel *is* two weeks old :p)
