Oops, that did it...
Answer was 'Gorilla' (from gnome-themes-extras-0.2-2mdk)
Switching to 'Industrial' (ximian-artwork-0.2.26-1mdk) brought my menu icons
back.

I always thought that Gnome icon theme just changed the icons for nautilus,
velocity, etc, ie, file managers, and that menu icons were fixed...
