Are you using UTF8 locales? Does this happen with other tools, like "ls --help",
too?

(just didn't know where I should file the bug, so I filed it under rxvt)
in rxvt, aswell as any other console and also when changing to tty1 etc.,
umlauts are shown as cryptic signs, but not when I type them myself (that works
perfectly), only when text is printed out onto the console from the computer
