Hmmm, I am not sure if this is one or two bugs. But the path provided by
/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc is incorrect:

$ grep -i path /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc.rpmnew
SystemPath=/usr//bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin::/usr/local/bin
UserPath=/usr//bin:/bin:/usr/bin::/usr/local/bin

You can see the one the original poster is complaining about is the UserPath,
plus the paths pulled from /etc/profile (/usr/X11R6/bin and /usr/games), plus
the user path added by the default $HOME/.bashrc ($HOME/bin).

Steffen, do you get the kdm path when using XDM_MANAGED in startx.autologin?

I expect that the PATH for a non-root user should be the same whether she gets
to the desktop via autologin or via a login window. This appears not to be
the case.
Path upon autologin to desktop:
/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin
Path after loging out of desktop and back in:
/usr//bin:/bin:/usr/bin::/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/home/craig/bin:
Path after logging into a pseudoterminal:
/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/home/craig/bin:

Note the peculiar /usr//bin: entry in the second situation above.
