Hey Dave:

I do NOT run it without at least --no-uninstall --auto --auto-select.

This will tell you what "it" would like to do if you ran it without 
--no-uninstall, and also tells you about (some) deps issues. It does not 
remove stuff in any event. Changing --no-uninstall to --keep should also not 
remove stuff, but apparently does NOT tell you in any reasonable depth what 
the problems are. In fact if you ran --keep instead of --no-uninstall it will 
seem like the upgrading is being done when there are deps issues that are 
preventing newer packages from being installed.

At least that is what I can see from here.
