OK--got to do it this weekend... Reiserfs and all....

I copied away the user backup files to a hard disk on another computer,
specifically mounted for that purpose

I copied them back

I moved /etc/passwd and /etc/hosts* off and brought them back, also
/etc/smb.conf and /etc/smbpaswd.

Then I performed an upgrade (I had used hydrogen 1 for the first install and
I used the hydrogen 3 isos for the second--none of the files I needed were
corrupt)

Once I had everything back, I encountered the following problems:

Reiserfs The users had home directories on the server which were on their
desktops as nfs mounts /home/username/Desktop/backup. After copying those
back, I had some problems initially with permissions... I hacked on the
/etc/passwd file with sed and gawk to get a file which had user names then
deleted the top section which had the system users, saving the result at
/etc/userpass

Then

for i in `cat /etc/userpass'
do
        chmod -R 0755 /home/$i
        chown -R $i /home$i
        chgrp -R $i /home/$i
done

When I had finished this sequence, nfs mounts would NOT work... I looked at
the filesystems and all the directories wee there to any level of nesting,
but no files showed within them. ls -a -l was unrevealing--showing 0 files
in each directory.

When I selected all and deleted--then all 11000 files were reported as they
were deleted--something had broken the link of the directories to the files,
somehow.

I took the disk I had copied the files to, changed the mount from Reiserfs to
ext2, and put the other disk into the slot. User mounts started working.

Now on configuration, I was very happy to use the webmin tool throughout,
except.... (grrrr) for Postfix. Postfix kept reporting a broken config to
Webmin, so I had to go hack on /etc/postfix/main.cf (minimally, just gave it
the host name) befgore I could use the excellent Webmin tool to complete the
configuration. (Please note that one for future distros in the DrakX
todo's--stick something in the /etc/postfix/main.cf file in hostname so it
will come up under webmin without saying "go edit manually." I wasn't even
on the server while I was using Webmin.

Other than that SOLID!!! BEST EVER!!!! FAR OUT!!! RELIABLE!!! (I need a
Thesaurus for all the superlatives). Reiser is still very much beta on the
fs, and the missing plug to postfix could cause some newbies not to try to
configure a mail server (is that a bad thing?) , but you get my rating of
LEAST hassle for server setup.

Civileme

Guess you can tell I am putting a LOT of faith in you--my servers have been
on your system since Venus and I have had fewer problems than ever
before--even back to the days of 2.0.34 and the Infomagic Workgroup Server.
