I know this is under VMWare so a lot of things are provided by vmware's drivers, but I would think this probably ties in with the old problem of apic doing weird things to a couple of NIC cards (though usually it's the rtl8139). Check to see if the IRQ it's getting is 16 or higher. If so, pass noapic to the install kernel at boottime and see if it makes a difference. - -- Blue skies...
