It's due to the applet date (near the volume and the work area selector) which is not a fixed size. When putting "applet date" with seconds, the width of characters changes and it makes move the "work area selector" as the width change => keep a fix width (depending on the max width of characters displayed, generally taking width('W') * max chars displayed works correctly) I think it belongs to gnome-applets, I've got version gnome-applets-2.3.6-1mdk, haven't tried with 2.3.6-3 though, I suppose it still exists ?
