Rpmdrake should do a diff of .rpmnew/.rpmsave and if no changes are detected, zap the rpmsave, or use .rpmnew automatically. This will reduce the amount of files you have to manually inspect.
you can urpmi etc-update, but since it is a gentoo tool, it sucks a lot, when i have some time i will contrib a fixed version.
