This is a kernel issue. On 9.0, where the kernel had ext2/ext3 ACLs, ACLs work from samba2/3 with no problems (I haven't tested recent samba3 for ACLs on ext2/3 on 9.0 but it did work a while back). > Samba 3 is beginning to look very interesting and the > incorporation of ext3fs ACLs in the coming release > would be very much welcomed. > > Any possibilities? > Maybe Thomas will find time for yet another patch? > Any opinions? Use XFS if you are really serious about ACLs (IMHO). They have worked since Mandrake 8.1 (first kernel update for 8.1 included XFS support IIRC), and was only broken on 9.1, for about 2 months until 0.25mdk (or Danny's 0.22mdk). Plus xfsdump/xfsrestore support ACLs, and XFS is pretty decent (we have over 250GB of data on XFS at present). As for samba3, packages in contrib should work fine, and it will stay in contrib until samba-3.0.0 is out, which it seems may be too late for package freeze in cooker for 9.2 (unfortunately), unless the samba team miraculously makes their intended release date (4 or 5 days time). I still have at least one unfixed bug on samba3 (user SIDs are not resolved when samba3 is a member of a samba2 domain), which has not been addressed by beta3, will test cvs soon. Comment about samba2/3 packages is welcome, this just isn't one that samba2/3 can affect.
