I had the same problem. Neither of my boot floppies worked either (yes, they have the correct kernel for my current setup, and oddly enough they have worked in the past). I ended up downloading the MDK9.2 Beta 2 iso images with my WinXP box and burning them to CD so I could run "rescue". I then went to /boot/grub and ran install.sh. Problem solved - I hope. The box booted up properly at that point.
