Product: harddrake
Component: program
Summary: unwanted formatting of ext3 partition to ext2
Product: harddrake
Version: 9.2-0.32mdk
Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: program
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
In mandrake 9.1, I destroyed an existing partition to split it in 3 : hda5,
hda10 and hda9 (minor bug: 9 is after 10)...
I wanted it to be ext3, format worked for the first one but not for others.
I could mount the formatted one, copied files onto it, filled the 2GB (as I did
an mv it did not complain much but deleted original files).
I got in /var/log/messages alarming things :
messages:Aug 8 23:36:19 BenAthlux kernel: EXT3-fs error (device ide0(3,10)):
ext3_new_inode: reserved inode or inode > inodes count - block_group = 0,inode=12
messages:Aug 8 23:36:19 BenAthlux kernel: EXT3-fs error (device ide0(3,10)) in

and before I find :

Well I've only lost MdK9.1rc3 and MdK9.2b2 isos, I can recover them... not such
a loss ! do backup, make backup, ensure you've backup(ed) everything crucial,
and be sure they are valid, double check : not so unuseful as a corrupted backup
!! (freesbeeCD and tears perhaps).
My question : does ext3 rely on a journal outside partition ? I've mixed MdK9.1
and MdK9.2b2 so I'm not sure what is where (neither Linux it seems as lilo is
all in errance as well, I've filed a bug and avoided *any* f word).
How come I've lost data ?! My confidence in harddrake for partition creation is
lowering could you be precise in changelog so that I know when to do a backup
(ALWAYS...) and be confident that my main system can boot ???
All is well that ended well, that time. Keep me confident please.
My user point of view : a partition created is as secure as a burned CDROM (even
more).
