The first thing I see after choosing a boot image in lilo,
is an error message: "ide: late registration of driver"

There is a thread on this topic in the kernel list:

So far, I am not sure this bug has been fixed. Alan Cox said he had
a quick hack by July 23, but this is all I know.

Perhaps for this reason I can't use swsusp, even passing a correct swap
partition as a kernel parameter via lilo. The boot process hangs on a
panic right after (apparently) loading swsusp. If I don't use swsusp
though(i.e. I don't provide a valid swap partition), I can boot up ok.

This has been going on with the 2.4.22 series, including
kernel-2.4.22.1mdk-1-1mdk

Cheers !
