description:
Essentially, with the rc2 snapshot, the following happens with a scanenrdrake
run and a manual install of a scanner for which known drivers already exist:
1) does not autoinstall becasue the driver has a different name in scannerdrake
than in teh SANE database, so a match lookup fails;
2) therefore, go to manual install procedures:
select manual on first run after install, then:
a) edit /etc/sane.d/epson.conf so that the path for default search matches
device path that the installed scanner opresent button uses-- if scsi left
selected, sane-find-scanner does not find scanner at all, ditto generic usb
autosearch because of a combo of mismatch above and lack of a specifc usb path
for sane-find-scanner.
b) run sane-find-scanner
c) run scanimage -L
d) run XSANE to see if scanner layers hooked, and it runs now but gives blank
scans and a lack of sync to scanner settings. Power cycling scanner and
replugging USB cord does not trigger a hot-swap reset, scanner WILL go through
scan cycle but apparently as far as XSANE is concernd pass almost no data-- so
scanner is there but data flow to XSANE that is can handle not there.
e) try for an hour to set things manually to get even text to show up at all.
f) reboot in disgust.
g) scanning works after reboot-- what boot cleanup fixed it, and why was this
hook not accomplished before reboot???
h) why is the manual run of scannerdrake a one-time thing, and why does it
thereafter exit even after reboot??? Why were there separate drivers for the
1250 photo when the 1250 photo has an extra head that must be run either\or only
and for normal scanning is a 1250 scanner??? Since cannot reenter scannerdrake
toi extent of getting it to add a scanner (if one set up, spontaneous exit
occurs when it is run later and either manully config or add a scanner is then
clicked), and why was the scanner run in photo\slide mode until after reboot but
autodetected mode after reboot, adn why was mode query acted on by scanner but
never got a response received to scannerdrake until after reboot and why is a
reboot of computer required to get an on-the-fly mode change to work ONLY before
Iscan was installed???
scannerdrake and lower interlinkages with upper layers schwer gebrokkenem (very
badly broken). same sane in RH 8.1 beta 3 works-- not sane, is MDK scripting or
USB ala mandrake or both.
blocker-- normal user would post about bug before rebooting after the XSANE
accepted scanenr but could not use data (it scanned, showed scan, blank scan
until reboot). Paying user would expect fix now that let him scan out of box. If
not fixed, will not buy final. String test is not point only testing, it is
intermodular testing. Modules did not abend on run, they ran and incompletely
did their jobs in relationship to each other.
