I don't know if this was by design but...

I just installed Mandrake 7.1 last night. I have an AMD Athlon system based on
the Viper chipset. I turned on hard drive optimizations during the install and
when the system booted for the first time it hung hard while trying to turn on
the optimizations.

After a little snooping I found a small issue with the Mandrake-configured
kernel. Support for the AMD Viper chipset is turned on, but if you read the
info, it says "If you say Y here, you also need to say Y to "Use DMA by default
when available", above. Alas, this was set to no. I set this to yes, recompiled
the kernel, and everything works great now.

As I said, I dunno if this is by design but I thought I would mention something
in case it was an oversight.
