We are shipping Galeon as GNOME default browser since Mdk 7.2. There is no plan
to change that for Mdk 9.2 but it might change for next major release.
Nothing prevent you to select Epiphany manually..
But "official" for GNOME doesn't mean "official" for Mdk GNOME..

Galeon appears under the "Gnome Workstation" section, but Epiphany doesn't.
However, Epiphany is the "official" Gnome Desktop browser as of 2.4. Shouldn't
it also be displayed?
