Well, sufice it to look at qa, there are many related problems. Muting or
keeping sound level to zero at startup is confusing with an hardware problem.

bug 4568 a duplicate of this one
bug 1503 may be related (seems a conflict with esd and snd-via82xx)
bug 2124 gives a hint at how good quality sound is a plus, it has to work...
that's where integration plays it's role : maybe you could "recruit" testers
with a specific mailing in ccc ? giving a list of tests to do / commands to
enter to get optimal feedback)
bug 3245 that's for ISA card why should they be overlooked ? (good diagnosis but
only manual solutions, not for the noobie)

bug 133 first appearance of need to unmute alsa
bug 3739 gives a hint at a solution for alsa not to mute after service stop/start
bug 4344 mute/set to zero => alsa bug identified (Mandrake could provide the
workaround to set to 50% even though it's not a Mandrake bug, depending on user
requirements and votes)
bug 3979 and 2377 identify that sound level is set to 0 instead of a decent
level (0 means broken for the average user, some sound even too low means it
works and sound has to be changed)

other related bugs
bug 3014 and 2735 showing difference in kmix / aumix behaviour found with mute
bug 2987 shows solution for defaults saving/loading for kmix, implemented ?

hope this help. I searched for volume, level, sound, aumix, kmix, alsa, mute.

Chipset of my mainboard is VT82C686 with buildin sound system VIA82Cxxx_audio.
After installing 9.2beta1, all channels(master, wave, cd, midi) of my sound card
was muted by default. I must re-enable it by hand.

If it possible, please un-mute the sound by default.
