I have made some progress, but it was a long process of trial and error, but
heres the lowdown of what I needed to do to get the distro installed and semi
working. I still do not have USB or Firewire functinality, but at least I can
boot into the kernel and run software.

To get this to work, I needed to disable usb, firewire, and my hpt372 onboard
raid controller in the BIOS, and do a fresh install. The installer program also
only picks up 896 out of 1024 meg of ram that I have installed, so I left it
with the default for Lilo, did not append mem=1024, it detects the full amount
of memory on reboot just fine. Another problem I had was in partitioning, I had
to use custom, and make sure that my ext partition was marked as / for the mount
point. If I deleted my original partition /hda6 and recreated the partition,
somehow it got marked as /hda7, and then the bootloader could not find the
partition on boot (since it's really still /hda6). To correct that issue, I
needed to restart the install, and make sure I reset the partition in custom
with / as the mount point, that made it point back to /hda6.

Once booted into the system, I installed the Nvidia drivers, only to be told
that the kernel sources were not installed, even though I did select them on
install. So I installed the kernel sources and built my kernel driver, and
edited my xconfig file. Now I had working graphics. Next problem was getting
audio to work. After hours of futzing around, I finally understood the error
message it was giving me, I didn't have permission for /dev/dsp as a user
account. I needed to go into /dev/sound and reset all the permissions in that
directory so that the user account had permission to use said device. Then
booted back into user, and I had sound.

Trying to test the new Mandrake 9.2 RC-1 release, cannot get kernel to get past
usb-uhci in the boot process. If I disable USB in the BIOS, kernel will not boot
farther than "finding module dependencies". Both errors cause a hard lock that
requires a cold boot to get out of. This board is based on the new Via KT600
chipset, with the Via KT600 north bridge and Via VT8237 south bridge chipset.
Audio chipset is Realtek ALC655.
