I think it is, since the display of other graphics (such as the default
background for Mandrake 9.1) is better in 16 bit mode than in 24bit
mode. It could be triggered by OpenGL use (qt is compiled with OpenGL
support, GTK+ doesn't have native OpenGL support), but I think the best
solution for this bug is to use 16bit by default.

Since other display cards work fine in 24bit mode (such as this TNT2
running NVIDIA drivers, and another TNT2 with XFree86's nv driver, and
my GeForce2MX both with and without the NVIDIA drivers), I don't think
it is a software problem.
