alright, sound does indeed work for most wavs. I had "play" looping over the
sounds in /usr/share/sounds, it failed over a few others but it worked most of
the way. This doesn't make the problem any better since the same loop finishes
without errors on my other commputers with other sound chips.

using mpg123 I get no errors, but mpg123 apparently runs thru esd, at least
that's what hooked to /dev/dsp when I play mp3

OTOH, plain ogg123 fails with:

Audio Device: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) output
ALSA snd_pcm_hw_params_set_period_size error: Invalid argument
Error: Cannot open device alsa09.

specifying arts for ogg123 gets me frequent dropouts with long (sometimes
30sec) periods of white noise until the sound kicks in again

again, running ogg123 thru esd is just fine

description:
I noticed that I have no sound on a ECS K7SOM. It worked fine with older cooker
kernels. This computer doesn't have a continuous cooker so I can't tell when
sound stopped working.

Anyway, here's what I do to reproduce:

modprobe snd-intel8x0
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/dsp count=10 (no errors)
play some.wav (oops)
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/dsp count=10 (never returns)

after that the dsp is reported busy. I cannot stop the sound
services or remove the modules.

if someone tells me how to capture the oops output, I'll provide it
