THe problem is not "gtk applications" but *OLD gtk1* applications.
New gtk2 ones can access the ttf files directly with the same level of quality
as KDE; and the Vera fonts are indeed used prioritarly for the "Sans", "Serif"
and "Monospace" default fonts.
The problem is gnucash and a small handfull of other programs still use old gtk1
toolkit, which uses the X11 server fonts, which has lots of drawbacks and
doesn't behave very well in case of missing fonts (while new Xft technology
simply searches another font if the requested one is missing)
The 75 dpi bitmap font package should be installed by default, it is the better
solution.
