I think this is due to a missing %{alternative_major} in the update-alternatives
in the preun script of 2.2.8a-9mdk, which was fixed by 2.2.8a-10mdk. See:

Please note that %preun/%postun scripts show the bugs in *previous* packages ...
I did ask people not to file bugs relating to alternatives between -9mdk and
-11mdk ...
Please reopen if -11mdk doesn't fix this (you can test by 'rpm -Uvh --force
samba-client-2.2.8a-11mdk.i586.rpm').

With samba-client 2.2.8a-11mdk (not 10mdk but 11mdk was not in the list), the
update gave me :
