This will not work until all desktops use one menu/mime-type system (who 
the idiots were who decided to implement one per desktop is something I 
would like to find out ...). Your associations will be reset every time 
you run update-menus (which happens when you log in, and should happen 
after you install a new package). You may be able to put entries in with 
the menudrake, I haven't tried.

At least though, it would be nice if all packages provided working mime 
types .. or at least if the whole system were documented. I don't know if 
Gimp's XCF is recognized in KDE now or not (last week it wasn't), and 
there is no way I can tell where I should file the bug ... KDE? 
mandrake_mime? Gimp?

Can someone in the know make a wiki page, or post the bare essentials here 
and we will ...
