The server works (at least here, I got the same ASUS L5800C). The external
monitor doesn't need to be switched on. Actually, if I specify
Options "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,NONE"
it still works. The point is that the hardware must _think_ that there is an external
monitor so that Fn+F8 works. The BIOS switches the console on, but the
radeon driver not. I have both the 'fbdev' and 'vesa' drivers working, but 'ati' only
with this trick. I use Mandrake 9.2 Rc2 with X 4.3 and have tried the drivers
from ~alanh. Unfortunately, it still doesn't work... I _think_ the problem is related
to the fact that this laptop uses the Samsung LTN150P1-L02 TFT panel since
many other laptop users report that the Radeon 9000 works just fine for them,
also at 1400x1050. I can't get it to work at any resolution. Also, the radeonfb
framebuffer from the linux kernel reportedly works fine with the 9000, but not for
me.
Although you can buy a 15-pin male connector (standard VGA monitor
connector) and use some aluminium foil (don't know the english words) to
connect some pins (don't know which matter, just connect them all, ;-) and plug
that small connector into your laptop. No monitor is attached, but the hardware
_thinks_ a monitor is attached. Then, use the ati driver and use Fn+F8 to switch
from 'external monitor' to panel a few times. Then the screen should come up.
