apmd seems to be the source of the problem. Redid the install again with kde
environment and console tools. Did not get apmd installed ( which group on the
install selects that? ).
Without apmd running my laptop suspends ( or indicates so by the crescent on the
thinkpad ) and resumes better, no power indication in kde of course...
Perhaps a bad interaction between the kernel and APM?

On a ThinkPad A22p with the builtin ethernet card there is an issue with susped
/ resume if the machine is started with the network attached.
This is with acpi set to ht.
When the machine suspends with the network attached it takes about a minute to
go through it's operations then the machine emits a single low beep and does not
suspend ( to ram ). This is what shows in messages:

When the machine is opened the screen is garbled and the keyboard is dead.
Power cycling the machine is the only option.
If the machine is started *without* the network attached then suspend/resume
works fine. After the first suspend/resume you can connect the network cable
and then suspend/resume with no problems.
