Please can you give the output of (as root):
# update-alternatives --display smbclient
(I think the only possibility is you have one mount.smb{,fs} version,
and a different smbmount version, but I don't know how ...)
and:
$ rpm -q samba3-client
I can't reproduce this.
As user:
$ smbmount //hermes/bgmilne mail
Password:
$ df ./mail
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
//hermes/bgmilne 25619456 14234624 11384832 56%
/home/bgmilne/mnt/mail
$ smbumount ./mail
$ smbmount3 //hermes/bgmilne mail
Password:
$ grep smb /proc/mounts
//hermes/bgmilne /home/bgmilne/mnt/mail smbfs
rw,uid=501,gid=4,mounted_uid=501,file_mode=0755,dir_mode=0755 0 0
$ smbumount3 ./mail
As root:
# mount -t smb //hermes/bgmilne mail -o username=bgmilne
Password:
# df ./mail
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
//hermes/bgmilne 25619456 14234624 11384832 56%
/home/bgmilne/mnt/mail
# mount -t smbfs //hermes/bgmilne mail -o username=bgmilne

rw,file_mode=0744,dir_mode=0755 0 0
mount -t smb{,fs}3 also works for me.
Also, please show the exact command line you are using, and if you are
using a mount point saved in /etc/fstab, please give the relevant line.
