The boot loader configuration wizard in the install process allows users to
add/modify/delete different entries. This page lacks a "Back" button, so if one
accidentally deletes an entry they cannot undo this or cancel without saving. I
did this myself, and if caused all sorts of grief: I meant to press "modify" to
see what the boot options were for the default entry, but pressed the delete
button by mistake (it's easily done!). I then had no way to find out what the
boot options were, but was committed to installing without the default boot
entry. Since devfs seems to depend upon some of these boot options the system
did not ehave properly.
