I saw some problems with the Linux Mandrake installation program of the 9.2 rc2
version.
I mean we need some installation classes according to some criterions which
could be:
a. always running or not (does not mean "server or not")
b. tiny configuration or not
c. save energy or not
For the "a." case, I would like to have an install class where anacron is
installed by default. Think at the home user who don't know what is anacron and
whose system is always down when some administration task are planned by cron.
Its system will never be well configured !
For the "b." case, think at people who are using tiny hardware. This hardware is
not necessary old, the low power sometimes save weight. I use such a laptop
(recent but not powerfull because of weight and energy savings). I always do
manually the following
settings:
- less virtual consoles (6 -> 2)
- suppress some services
- desktop environnement settings (opaque window move, animated lists,
KDE deamons, ...)
For the "c." case, think at people who are using a battery powered system. I do
the following settings:
- activate ACPI (user who don't know what it is will not use it)
- automatically manage services and "hdparm -S [delay]" according to power
source (battery or AC)
- perform some settings of the "b." case
Currently, you are looking like a good distro for newbies. But really, users
must have some knowledges in the system configuration in order to fit their
needs. So your distro seems to be for newbies but it is not. I think some
newbies will be disappointed by their first contact with Linux Mandrake 9.2.
I already said it while 9.1 preparation but you never took this in account (see
bug #2362). I hope this more generic notice will help you in some way (I'm
always hoping).
