OK, I just installed rc2 on another box here, and also didn't get a
desktop in KDE. Starting nscd on boot fixes it, so I guess for NIS and
LDAP nscd should be set to start at boot (should not be necessary for
winbind which does it's own caching, but I haven't tested in the last
few days).

Pixel, any chance of doing this?
