Here is the output you requested:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] carsten]# update-alternatives --display samba-client
No alternatives for samba-client.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] carsten]# ls -l /etc/alternatives/smbmount
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           18 Sep 16 21:07
/etc/alternatives/smbmount -> /usr/bin/smbmount2*   ( green so I guess it is not
broken )

/etc/alternatives/mount.smb -> /sbin/mount.smb2*

Both seems to be okay.

After running:
 update-alternatives --auto smbclient

I was able to mount the directory as root.

description:
I upgraded my 9.1 installation to 9.2 - this went fine.

But my previously defined samba mountpoints (which reside on a mandrake linux
9.1 server) did not successfully remount when I logged in afterwards.
Choosing "Set Samba Mountpoints" in Mandrake Control Center result in the
following error :
"The package Samba-client needs to be installed. Do you want to install it?"
Eventhough samba-client is installed.

Printout from rpm -qa|grep samba:
samba-common-2.2.8a-13mdk
samba-client-2.2.8a-13mdk
samba-server-2.2.8a-13mdk

When clicking "OK" to install samba-client package, the following error comes out:
"Mandatory package samba-client is missing"

Leaving me in a deadlock.

So I tried to mount it from the command prompt:
mount -t smbfs -o username=carsten,password=flskor //lorien/test
/home/carsten/mnt/test/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //lorien/test,
       or too many mounted file systems

Best regards
Carsten
