ok the bug really is:
- if both sound & alsa services are enabled, we'll rely on aumix to restore
mixer settings
- if only alsa service is enabled, alsa service rely on alsactl
could you try the above patch?

/etc/rc.d/init.d/alsa does not restore mixer settings correctly
when you do : service alsa stop
you see: Doing alsactl to store mixer settings...
then when you do: service alsa start
you _do not_ see Doing alsactl to restore mixer settings...
symptoms: all channels muted / no sound / kmix showing sound icon muted
Problem seems to be an erroneous 'exit 1' before the call to alsactl restore
in /etc/rc.d/init.d/alsa
the attached patch solves the problem, at least for me, once the correct settings
have been done with alsamixer.
