it looks like the problem might be connected to the missing floppy
together with that inaccessible toshiba bios. There's no way of manually
setting things in the bios, only a *very* simple win32-based program to
set few options.

I tried lots of settings with the kernel boot line but I think
commenting floppy stuff with devfs may have done the trick.

one problem, the DVD-RW is listed 7 times, one for each lun. Is that a
problem? However, cdrecord only reports it on 0,0,0.
