if you boot with the extra S parameter (type "e" under grub or <escape> under
lilo in order to add parameters to the kernel), could you see something
related in /var/log/X* ?

I have Windows XP running and working and installed the latest Mandrake Version
on another 10GB partition. The install-process itself seemend to work including
the automatic update. After completing install Mandrake told me to remove CD and
reboot and I did.
Mandrake starts to boot, I can see the Window, where Mandrake checks disk
integrety etc, then it changes to a black screen and I guess the KDE should
start to load then but it doesn't. It seems to initiate my printer (at least
thats the last thing to make a noise) and than nothing happens anymore, only
black monitor and no disk work or anything else.
Plz keep in mind - I am a total Linux-Noob.
