Could you check that acpi is enabled on the kernel you're booting (i.e. acpi=on not acpi=ht) cause that's when the problems arise. It would be interesting to see if this is the case or not.

I have no floppy drive in my laptop (Compal ACL-10). I don't know if I have a parallel port (I think not), I don't think I ever checked. But Mandrake, although not without problems, loads fine on that machine!

Are you sure it's the floppy drive, or is it a kernel bug for a specific
piece of hardware on your machine(s)?
