Look into ~/.xsession-errors for error messages.
As a quick hack, you can also try adding the "source /opt/kde2/bin/kde2"
line at the beginning of /opt/kde2/bin/startkde. This is not necessary in
theory, but it can help fixing the problem.
BTW, did you try the kde2and1scripts rpm ?
