------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-26-09 02:29 -------
To reproduce the corruption when it occurs on some page, usually in a different
spot on the page, all I have to do is scroll the page. However, the problem
seems to be session dependent - sometimes I do not see it at all. E.g., this
session, with Galeon in Gnome2.4, has none(so far). The NYTimes news articles(
http://www.nytimes.com/ ) almost always have some corruption but not this
session. I am not sure if it is X session or WM session or browser session
dependent - one or maybe all of them _appears_ to be related. :(

I had a TNT2 Ultra and now have a GeForce4 ti4200; both are nVidia based but
from different companies. I am currently using the drivers from nVidia which
were compiled on this MDK 9.2 RC2(w/ cooker upgrades) system for the 2.4.22-10
kernel. However, the font corruption problem has been around since, at least,
MDK 9 with galeon and mozilla for gtk(v.1) and, IIRC, was present with the XFree
"nv" driver which I used for a long time with MDK 9.

The only other browsers I have which are not gecko are Opera 7.11 and dillo. I
do not recall ever seeing the problem in either of them. I do not use either
very much though, so cannot state unequivocally that they do not exhibit the
same behaviour.

Just recently I noticed that the font display corruption will also disappear if
I switch workspaces or if I switch focus.
To explain:
I wanted a screenshot and switched workspaces to get gkrellm as "sticky". When I
returned to the workspace where galeon was running, that corruption was gone.
I was a bit disconcerted so I reproduced some corruption on the same page and
opened GIMP to capture the screen. When the focus was returned to galeon, again,
the corruption was gone.

There is one other thing that I have noticed: the font displays of main text are
'washed-out'. By that I mean that they are not black as "black" should be; they
are sort-of grayish - look like print from an old typewriter with a ribbon that
has been overused.
The headings are usually okay but the main text is fuzzy & grayish. This text,
in this editor widget, is very washed out (and fuzzy too). The 'fuzzy' is
probably AA but the 'washed-out' appearance - ??? .

Also, this problem has also occured when using the DE's XFce3 & XFce4(beta &
RC's) so I do not think it is DE/WM related.

Fonts look good on most sites, but on some sites like cnn.com, c/net.com and
uk.yahoo.com news, the tops are missing on several characters which make it
difficult to read.
