I don't install cvs snapshots that have a release number > 1mdk. Why? 
Because either it's not going to upgrade well, or the maintainer is going 
to have to epoch it, or I have to do some clean up manually later (ie 
--force or --oldpackage).

Please see the section on the rpm howto on the wiki regarding prereleases, 
the suggested method is something like 
%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-0.%{IDENTIFIER}.mdk

where %{IDENTIFIER} is something like:
alpha1
beta2
cvsYYYYMMDD
pre3
rc1

(they would take precedence in that order, so hopefully cvs releases 
aren't necessary after a pre).

samba3 has some macros to help with this (although they are quite complex, 
but with 24 alphas, 3 betas and 4 rc's it did save a lot of time).
