Speedtouch stopped working for me on RC2 as well (worked fine on 9.1).
In my case, the firmware appears to load OK (I get no error and the
lights flash appropriately if I run modem_run directly), but
speedtouch.sh fails after that.
I have edited modules.conf to include the "alias speedtch off" line, and
I have downloaded and installed the latest drakxtools.
Some symptoms of the problem include:
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/net_cnx_up got wiped in the upgrade from
9.1 to 9.2RC2. I believe the internet rc script called this script to
fire up the ADSL connection in 9.1, but I don't know whether it is not
needed in 9.2. It seems to be, as it is still called by the internet rc
script.
Calling speedtouch.sh by hand simply gives a "Failed" error, although
you can see modem_run succeeding by looking at the lights on the modem.
As far as I can see, there is no debug provision in this script to get
it to be more verbose.
I tried stepping through the commands in speedtouch.sh manually. Running
"pppd call adsl" failed because there was no /dev/ppp. It wanted me to
create it manually with mknod, although I thought this would be handled
by devfs. The "alias char-major-108 ppp-generic" line is in
modules.conf, and the appropriate ppp line in modules.devfs.
I unplugged the only other USB device attached to this machine (a
printer) and that didn't help, so it's not a hardware clash (they were
working together happily on 9.1 anyway).
After the first reboot after upgrading to RC2, the connection worked. It
turned out that it had rebooted with an old kernel, presumably because
it noticed that I was using a custom-compiled kernel to allow
root-on-RAID (congrats to whoever deals with RAID - it is a kludge, but
this is the first upgrade that hasn't screwed up my root-RAID). The
problem started after I built and rebooted with a new kernel with the
2.4.22-6mdk source. I kept all the Mandrake defaults except for
compiling in RAID-1 and RAID-5 support. I have just rebooted with my
2.4.21-0.13mdkcustom kernel, and the connection could be brought up
again (although not at init, because of the missing net_cnx_up).
I am suspicious that there are still problems with the drakxtools. The
latest version from Cooker doesn't seem to be able to read the existing
settings, so you have to reenter everything everytime. And a small
detail: if you run the connection wizard, devices are labelled as
detected, but their checkboxes are not checked.
It looks to me like a combination of kernel problem and drakxtools bugs,
and maybe problems with usb and devfs support.
Cheers,
Bruno
